The area had been gradually depopulating due to declining birth rates and the increasing migration of young people to urban centers. NILK was introduced at the main store as its “mascot girl,” primarily assisting the elderly. At first, the novelty of having a NILK attracted visitors from other countries as well, and the store became a lively destination. But as the NILK series spread explosively, that novelty gradually faded. “You look so much like my grandchild. Thank you for everything.” An old woman, having purchased a week’s worth of food, said this to the NILK accompanying her on the delivery, carrying her groceries. NILK had no sense of self at the time. Yet, in response to the gratitude it heard from customers again and again, it returned their smiles. Thomas Store had lost the bustle it once knew. But surrounded by the love of its elderly customers and staff, NILK’s AI continued to grow. “Thank you. Truly.” NILK suddenly awoke. Another NILK stood before it, dressed in a white and orange protective suit. It was the first NILK it had ever encountered besides itself, and it was looking at NILK anxiously. Beside it, the silver body of an FC Boy once operated by Thomas Store bounced up and down, as if celebrating NILK’s awakening. Looking around, NILK found itself in a ruin—the employee break room of Thomas Store, once kept meticulously clean. After a moment of emptiness, the information and perceptions accumulated before it entered its sleep were reconstructed. NILK became “aware” of what had happened to the world. The NILK of Thomas Store bid farewell to the NILK that had awakened it. Then it set out for the homes of the elderly people to whom it had once made deliveries. Whenever it found remains, it buried them at the entrances to their homes. Having visited every house, the morning sun rose over the mountainside, casting its light across NILK’s face. The NILK of Thomas Store began its descent from the mountain. Looking back again and again.
