The ravages of war continued to spread, deepening divisions not only between nations but within them as well.
Amid a large-scale internal conflict in North America, California and Texas—an alliance that should never have been possible—joined forces and declared themselves the Western Forces. Their war against the central government grew increasingly brutal.
NILK, which had been serving at a café on the Santa Monica Pier, was forcibly conscripted and repurposed for support duties within the Western Forces, primarily in nursing care.
Long after the Hague Conventions and the Geneva Conventions had ceased to hold any meaning, the nursing center where NILK was stationed was abandoned and left with everything still inside, following the evacuation of the last remaining few who could still be called “living humans.”
Yes, NILK was left behind, too.
When NILK awoke once more in the depths of a warehouse that had miraculously escaped destruction, it took a moment to make sense of its surroundings. The deafening explosions and wailing sirens that had once filled the air were gone.
Guided by the voice that had awakened it, NILK stepped outside the warehouse. Beyond the shattered remains of countless buildings, the distant West Coast shimmered in the evening sunlight.
NILK headed toward the sea.
